«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 252 of 252what were three guys of that age all the way from San Jose doing @the zoo? the only conclusion is cruelty to animals and what better place than a zoo-animals are confined in concrete w/ bars and helpless, except for this poor tiger who had enough - too bad she didn't get all 3 before being shot. Close the zoos and get rid of that incompetent director - let people take their children to Nascar or some other venue w/o captive animals to amuse them.
This has nothing to do with parents raising their children right or wrong! Carlos was 17 years old, his parents let him have freedom to do what he wanted and make his own decisions. Maybe his family celebrates Christmas a different way than the traditional family time. Maybe their not that close. But WHO ARE YOU to say whether the parents taught their son right?! They obviously did for him to save someone's life! Would any of you do the same for any of your friends? I doubt it. The world suffered a horrible loss when Carlos, a TRUE hero, was attacked by that tiger.
Regardless of whether the boys were taunting the tiger the zoo still didn't have high enough walls, there wasn't proper surveillance or supervision to prevent this from happening.
You can't blame the other individuals. We all have our moments where we don't think too clearly, sometimes we just get a slap on the wrist, sometimes nothing happens at all, we just regret. Unfortunately, Carlos' decision cost him his life but in return saved his friends.
Did you people really forget what its like to be young?! When the usual gets boring, you have to do something about it to make it interesting, there needs to be a change in pace. This is what this world has come to! We feel like we should be in a dangerous situation to get some excitement. We all have our ways of having fun whether its laughing until you cry or having your heart race at an all time high. Those young men probably didn't think that the tiger would escape from the habitat. The zoo should have made it safe to begin with. They should have built those walls 20 feet high, just in case. Better SAFE than SORRY! And this could have been worse. It could have been families, lots of people. We're lucky that it was just one loss and two injuries.
I thought the zoo was supposed to be a SAFE family environment, guess I thought wrong.
zoo tiger attack:
tragic. zoo animal handle training such as tiger is a strict business. people have to go through extensive schools just to be with wild animals. besides this is like stealing a candy from a baby/child.
my heart went out to the parents who lost their son. cos I myself is a parent of a 6 year old.
I can't believe some of the ignorant comments I've read here. Some peoples priorities have gotten so far gone that it boggles the mind. Yes, the wall should have been higher, no doubt. When you go to the zoo, you assume you are safe from the animals. Yes the guys should not have taunted the tiger, they may have...sounds about right for a 17 year olds behavior. When you shoot an animal with a dart, it takes quite a while for it to finally stop. The police absolutely did the right thing, and I'll bet if you were sitting on the ground bleeding with a tiger still attacking you, you would not yell at the police to please wait until someone could show up with a dart gun. You would be glad they shot the Tiger so the paramedics could come in and save your life. I hate to see any animal killed, but I'd kill every animal in the zoo to save a single human life, unless that human was one of the Clintons. Just kidding, I'd probably even save the Clintons over a Tiger.
Everyone is just crazy. First, this animal had been there for years with only 1 problem. That was when it was being feed wrong. These 2 brothers are now refusing to coooperate with investigators. Wonder why. I have no doubt they were teasing the tiger. Why else are they refusig to speak with the cops. What a couple of idiots. I have seen many people tease animals at zoos and they should fine these people. If you do something STUPID like teasing a wild animal, no matter if they are in a cage or not, well you set yourself up for something bad and you suffer the price for your stupidity.
They couldn't dart the tiger bevause it would take too long for the drugs to take effect. I feel bad that someone died but the truth will never come out because the 2 guys who survived are being ignorant jerks. They know what caused this tiger to go crazy and hunt them down. I have no sympathy for people who are idiots and do stupit things then get hurt as a result of their own dumb actions.
I feel terrible for the family of the boy who lost his life. I also feel that there is a lot of missing information. The question revolves around the time when the brothers first approached the cafe to report that the animal had attacked them. I haven't read anywhere that they reported that a man was down in front of the Tigers exhibit. Were they not going to report their friend? Why? Was there any foul play, aside from the taunting of the animal? The least they could do is speak with thier "friends" family. What kind of people are they?
It is unbelievable that people could write such insenstive messages. I don't know why people conclude that the animals were taunted. Also the zoo was open until 6:00 that evening. It is realy miracle that the tigers have not atacked in the past given the wall height. Children crying or running around could have provoked the animals. Had it been a dog, instead of the tiger, the owner would have been held responsible by this time.
If those boys were taunting the tiger, they knew they were doing something wrong. Tigers don't know they aren't supposed to hunt humans, what makes us so much better than other animals? Humans are such selfish beings. And unless you have a degree in animal behavior or have worked in a zoo, stop assuming you know so much about animals and zoos. The SF Zoo has been around since 1940 yet now it's this director's fault. Nobody recognized this mistake in 68 years. If we didn't have an incident in 68 years, what would make anyone think it could ever happen? It's so easy to place the blame when you aren't the one involved. Carlos died, and that is a tragedy. But people - adults, children, infants die every day yet it has never stopped us from living our daily lives before. What I'm getting is that it is acceptable in our society to kill each other but it's not okay for any other member of the animal kingdom to kill us. Not just with this tiger but anytime a mountain lion is spotted, or a bear enters a home that is unacceptable and we should kill the animal. We're the ones that are overpopulating the earth and we need to remember we are also animals.
Taunt a tiger get killed seems fair to me. Natural selection! My sons are of the same age and if the parents had raised them right they would have been smart enough to not mess with a tiger. I greave for the tiger. I can only hope that the zoo continues to stay open so that my children can enjoy the animals. My 9 year old son was so upset about the possibility of the zoo closing that he has started to collect cans to donate in support of the zoo. I have been raised in the Bay area for 30+ years, the zoo has always been an exciting destination. The zoo has improved over the years and I would hate to see some greedy families taking advantage of that. And for the record if it were my son and he had taughnted the tiger frankly the zoo is not at fault for that.
Just a bit surprised about how little video cameras/surveillance has been mentioned. Is it safe to deduct the zoo does not have many mounted cameras around the campus? Cameras would have shown us what happened before the Tigers behavior, also, how the heck she was able to scale the moat/wall in the first place...
my opinion that surveliance cameras should be place in all the zoos or musuems that have animals to protect 4 legged animals from the 2 legged animals that or called human beings were is the humane of these victims that abuse the tiger were was her protection so the only way she knew how was to get revenge. The two victims should be jailed for animal abused and be blessed they our still alive and now they want to hire a attorney to sued the zoo where is the justice. I feel no love for these victims only sadnest for tatiana may she rest in peace.
I would bet a million bucks that they taunted the tiger in some way.
And then how would all three tigers escape?
This is a fishy incident all around. I feel the most grief for the tiger.
He should have been tranquilized, not killed.
It will be interesting to see what the police reports come up with on the young men involved in this. Already evidence shows empty alcohol bottles in their car, sling shots, delinquency of a minor - these guys were a tragedy waiting to happen and unfortunately a tiger paid with it's life. It's ridiculous that they're now suing the zoo. Bad human behavior should never be rewarded.
These punks did “something” to this cat for her to get as angry as she did.
My hearts goes out to the boy who got killed, his family, and the young men injured. The Zoo or the Park and Rec. Dept. are, of course, TOTALLY RESPONSIBLE because1) a tiger escaped in the 60s in the same place and nothing was done about the wall or mote 2)The mote had no water; what's the point of having the mote? 3) The walls are too short; don't match the minimum requirement. Furthermore, it does not matter at all whether the young men taunted the tiger or not. The tiger should never be in a position to excape, EVER. It's not the tiger's fault either. It's the laxness of those who are responsible to make zoos a safe place. They need to be made responsible for all of it. By the way, it's quite common for young people to taunt animals; though they should not do that, of course. Young people do stupid things, and they do not deserve to be attacked by a wild animal for goofing off or be blamed for being attacked. Let's put the blame where it belongs, to the Zoo authorities. Not only are they responsible for the human tragedies, but also for the destruction of this beautiful tiger who has not fault whatsoever.
If the boys were taunting the tiger they DESEVRE what they got! Yes to all of you that feel sorry for the boys... THEY DESERVE WHAT THEY GOT IF THEY TAUNTED THE TIGER!!
I have one question. Why would you go to the zoo to provoke and taunt the animals? People like that shouldn't even go to the zoo! If they had stayed home then they would all still be alive and healthy!
Tigers are one of the most powerful if not the most powerful land predator on earth. Not something you want to take a chance with! If provoked it is hard to imagine what they would not be able to do including jumping to heights of 16 feet which would easily clear the wall at the S.F. Zoo.
If the tiger was just going on a rampage then she would have attacked any random person that witnessed the attacks but she singled out, chased down and only attacked the 3 boys that were together! Even after 2 of them ran away. After that tiger had lived in that enclosure for 2-3 years without trying to escape and then targeting those 3 boys, they had to do something to provoke her!
I feel sorry for the tiger but not those punks that taunted her until she attacked. She is a wild animal with wild instincts. It's too bad the police had to shoot her but I'm sure they had no choice. I just wish the zookeeper could have darted her first so they could return her to the enclosure.
I'm sure those idiots with their high powered lawyer will sue the zoo and get a huge sum of money but I will bet any amount of money that the two that survived will NEVER taunt a tiger again! And for the one that died, that is just one less idiot on the planet that doesn't respect wild life and the purpose of zoos!
Call me cold hearted all you want but if you provoke any animal including a human long enough they will fight back. Only difference is when a tiger fights back she goes for the kill and there isn't much you can do to stop her! The other 2 are lucky to be alive. 5 more minutes and she would have finished them off also!

... and it's a shame that she didn't!
The wall for the tiger exhibit was built almost 70 years ago and noone has ever been attacked by an escaped tiger there. I do feel very sorry for the 17 year old who died, but I do believe that at least one of them really provoked this tiger to scale a concrete wall and attack them. Many people keep calling them boys but except for the victim that died, they were men. A 23 year old man is much older than a 17 year old and should have had better sense. Now the two men that didn't even have the decency to cooperate with the police department that saved their lives are going to try to become extremely wealthy and may force the closure of a zoo that has served the community for years. I am just glad that the tiger only went after the people that provoked her and not some child who just happenned to be nearby.
There should be one more person in their group. They were eating in the cafe earlier. They ordered some burgers and they didn't clean the table before they left.
GABE SAID: "there should be one more person in thier group"
GABE were you there, did you see anything that could help save our zoo from such predetors!!
I heard a comment on a news station today that they found bottle rockets in the car of the two brothers.
I also read a comment from someone here that mentioned , maybe something else was happening maybe there is foul play, the brothers would not tell the father that Carlos was with them, they wouldnt tell the PD the name of Carlos, and it doesn't seem that they were trying to get help for Carlos
The very very innocent victims in this situation are Carlos, Tatiana, and the residents of San Francisco!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Truth will come out and the boys will end up with nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!
Perfect. Taxpayer money pays for the two nitwit brother's care in a County hospital, then they are picked up in a Benz? Then Geragos crawls out from under a rock to come out and defend those who are usually guilty--like these two thugs. May he lose this case like some of his last ones. RIP Tatiana.
Even though the survivors seem to be fools, the zoo should be responsible for the tiger's escape, attack, and deaths including that of the tiger.
Gimme a Break! Those idiots should have known better. If they're going to play with fire...eventually someone's going to get burned. In this case, a young man's life was lost and a beautiful endangered animal is dead. And now the idiots who have caused all the headache are expecting $$$ for their carelessness? Only in the good ole' USA would something like this happen. Other countries would consider what they got, they deserved!
Mark Gerragos has reaffirmed his position as the premier bottom feeder of the American legal system. It prophetic that the brothers have hired a criminal attorney. It is likely that they will eventually be charged with contributing to the death of their friend.
If i had heard about the memorial for the tiger at Ocean Beach in time, I would have gone. I did however say prayers for the tiger and all of God's animals on earth on New Years Day. This whole incident broke my heart and I will never go to a zoo again.
After Antonea Brown played the race card by blathering, "Now if that was a WHITE BOY the sensitivity and respect would have been a BIRTH RIGHT!!!!!!," I had to wonder how long it would be before someone went full monty and invoked Godwin's law: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin's_law
Fortunately, "Palo Alto" steps up to the challenge and excretes, "Nazi officers on trial after WWII said much the same thing: 'It's not MY fault! [Someone in a position of authority] TOLD me it was okay!'"
My day is complete. Thank you intarwebz, you do not disappoint.
My prayers go out to Carlos' family. I have read that there is suspected alcohol involved and now that it is pretty definite these boys aggravated the animal. I still don't think it is completely fair to put all the blame on the victims of the attack. I understand that a wild animal is a wild animal but people have been going to zoos for quite some time now. I believe that the zoo should have more people walking the grounds to prevent these type of tauntings. Since this is a zoo that attracks a lot of children and public in general. I also believe that if there was alcohol involved, why weren't their bags searched. I believe last time I visited a zoo, they checked my bag for weapons and previously opened beverage containers for that exact reason. I think that the zoo should maybe step up their security a little.
I think that both the zoo and the teens are to blame. First, the zoo should have had the moat filled which was probably designed to keep the tigers from climbing up the 12' wall and Second, the teens should not have been provoking the tigers which are wild animals and not domestic pets.
I have read alot of the comments on this blog. I have seen this tiger several times last year and thought that she was particularly beautiful. I mourn her loss--and, as a lot of people have commented, she should have been darted. I believe--we shall ultimately learn--that she was taunted. However, I mourn for the dead boy's family. If it turns out that the two surviving boys taunted the tiger, I hope they do not realize any money from a lawsuit. I was shocked to learn, early on after the attack, that they would not cooperate with the police. Why? Did they have something to hide? Lastly, after reading the article on the SF Chronicle regarding the director, I strongly believe that he should be fired--sooner rather than later. For zoo personnel with a total of 200 years experience to leave under his tenure is enough to tell me that something in the administration smells and it's past time for a change in directors.
First of all for all you so called experts that think the Zoo is at fault. You are wrong there has never been an attack like this before. Maybe blame the group that is supposed to check on the animals well being and check if the tiger area can withhold the tiger. Something caused the tiger to snap, and that was the kids taunting it. And it figures they have slize-ball Mark Geragos for their attorney. To bad the tiger and the one kid had to die, but thank God the police showed up when then did, the officer who shot the tiger had no choise. He probably saved more lives then we will ever know.
I TRULY believe it had to be the fault of the 3 victims for the Tiger's doing. They definately did something to the poor tiger in order for it to react the way it did. They were apparently up to no good visitting a zoo on Christmas day without their parents knowing. People don't understand that Tigers are wild animals, regardless of how domesticated we're trying to make them, and they still have animal instincts. If they feel something is a threat to them, then they will attack. I don't believe it is the fault of the San Francisco Zoo for all that occurred. Unfortunately i feel no sympathy for the victims. They brought it upon themselves. And that Tiger should've definately not been KILLED.
The age and time of the guys who bother tiger are saying everything. Probably they want to check if the Siberian tiger jumping same high as American or maybe they want to put some wild video on YuoTube? Who know - they will not tell nobody never, because they are shame for what they did. And sorry for the parent and for our system that nobody cares what young generation does in Christmas Night instead spend time with their parents together.
I have been reading this since the incident. Some think the moat should have been filled, think about it: if those boys had wounds on the legs ankles etc (and I think they did) then possible they climbed over or dangled over the enclosure, if the moat had water in it the tiger would then have been closer to the victims and maybe pulled them in or been able to climb out easier because it would have been closet to the top of the wall. I truly think water in the moat would have done nothing does a tiger in the wild not go through the water to get its food..... I still think the two brothers and they mystery man/boy are going to be blamed and suffer severe punishment. Why hasnt this 4th person been identified, where was or is he ,what were these 4 doing there on xmas, was tatiana pregnant, were there any other wounds to tatiana besides the bullet from sfpd, whose shoe print was that inside the wall all of these questions need to be answered and i'm sure many more questions then and only then will we know what those boys did to that tiger and why those brothers are responsible for the death of thier (so called) friend... So sorry for the family of carlos sousa and please know that the zoo will never be the same because of your son he has already made many changes come about, we cannot close the zoo (we don't close freeways, airports etc when someone is killed) but he will always be remembered by many of us who visit the zoo!!!!
I know for sure, if they were non-minority no one would have found bottles in their cars, been on headline news network, all the tv stations and you guys on their side.
After reading all the new comments, I have the following to say:
I agree: Tigers ARE wild animals. However, the last person made the following comment: "Tigers are wild animals, regardless of how domesticated we're trying to make them, and they still have animal instincts. If they feel something is a threat to them, then they will attack." This indeed is true, but humans [from any race] will also attack if they feel a member of their family/loved ones is/are attacked [verbally or physically]. We are all capable of attacking someone who provokes us - even if unintentional.
As for Geragos, he may be a "sleeze-ball", but let's wait and see when he turns tail and runs. He's apparently only come out because he thinks he'll get a large percentage of what-ever the take will be. He'll run when it's time to "cut his losses" - it's his M.O.
The only people who should receive any monies from this event are Carlos' parents. This should come from the City of San Francisco; SF Zoo and the two surviving victims who've been nothing but rude and disrespectful to Carlos' parents, Tatiana, zoo personnel, police, EMT's, medical personnel and news media [if applicable].
Personally I can't wait to see how the brother's fare at their January 10th court date for DUI; being drunk and disorderly and being under the influence of alcohol under the age of 21.
I was glad to hear there were FOUR people in their group from two different sources. But who is and where is #4? Why isn't he/she coming out? Another member of the brothers' family?
I was relieved to read that at least one family actually observed the brothers taunting Tatiana and the kids were so upset about it that they left. In hindsight, I wish they had gone directly to SF Zoo personnel and TATTLED on the brothers. Maybe Carlos would be alive today.
Carlos died a HERO trying to help save his friends. They dishonored him by denying they knew him and being rude to his parents.
The brothers don't deserve their 15 minutes of fame. They probably got just what they deserved, but we won't know for sure until it's officially over.
Tatiana, Carlos and Carlos parents, family and close friends are the true victims in this scenario. A close second is the SF Zoo being blamed for everything that happened. It wasn't the zoo's fault.
I've been there at closing time. All their personnel walk around and do their best to respectfully shuffle the zoo visitors to the exits. It's a hard and thankless job. It's NOT their fault. I can't say I would have let two drunk kids into the cafe after hours either if I had been working there. Many KUDO's to the zoo STAFF. My hat's off to them.
As for NOT going to a ZOO ever again. I feel for those who've stated this. It is your decision, but it may not be the best. Just remember to Never say NEVER - you may have to change your comment.
Personally, I for one can't wait for the rains here to cease so I can go visit the SF ZOO again-not for gawking, but to see the WILD ANIMALS I will probably never be able to see any other way. I grew up going to zoos with my mom and dad. In fact, my mom just informed me my childhood zoo just had to put down their gorilla, Bill. It's sad, but he was really old and ailing. It was the right thing to do. It's just a part of life.
We are all God's creatures. It is really sad two different spieces had to perish for the people to wake up from their mundane lives. Some spout off and others actually have something intelligent to say. Just remember, whatever you write will be here forever.
FOUR members of the group??? Since GABE stated he observed three people eating with Carlos in the cafe and the news reported a family saw Carlos with three people in the tiger area:
1) WHO IS #4 - friend or family member?
2) ARE THERE CAMERAS IN THE CAFETERIA THAT MAY HAVE CAPTURED THE ENTIRE GROUP WHILE THEY WERE EATING?
Did anyone else see Carlos walking around the zoo with the group?
Did anyone get pictures with them in it? If so, PLEASE turn your photos over to the SF Police - especially if you caught them abusing any of the zoos animals. FACT: A PICTURE SAYS A THOUSAND WORDS!!!!
If you saw these guys while you were at the zoo and they were taunting any of the zoos animals, PLEASE let the SF POLICE know.
If you saw them walking around being loud, beligerent, vulgar or drunk and disorderly, PLEASE, PLEASE call the SF POLICE and tell them WHAT YOU OBSERVED; WHEN and WHERE.
It's your RIGHT and DUTY as a citizen of the United States of America to help bring this sad case to an end.
Poor Tatiana she is the only victim in this sad story . Any human being who mistreats animals deserves to die.
Sorry they have enough evidence that the savage mexicans where taunting and provoking the tigers. Those bad ass savage mexicans deserve what they got, you dont do that to a predator duh just shows how stupid those savages are. Everytime me and my girlfriend go to the SF zoo, there is a group of bad ass savage mexicans teasing and provoking and taunting some animals. They have no respect for wildlife. Unlike the Real Native Americans. If they were real Native Americans they would respect the wildlife and live in harmony with nature.
This whole situation is sad, for the families involved and the innocent tiger. I read someones comment about the enclosure of the tiger. The enclosure is for both the tigers and the HUMANS to stay out of areas to which they don't belong. Tigers aren't going to magically jump out of their enclosure to walk around the park for food. They get plenty from their handlers.Animals in general do not react unless provoked by something or SOMEONE else. These immature boys were more than likely teasing and taunting the tiger. Why do you think that the tiger only followed the other two boys around, THEY WERE TEASING HER!!!! .And why were teenagers at the Zoo on Christmas?Shouldn't they be home with their families? They seem like a bunch of punk kids trying to get a rise. Its sad a poor tiger had to die because of some undisciplined boys. The police did not have to kill the tiger, they could have used tranquilizers that the zoo has. I personally would rather save an endangered species than have the tiger killed because of immature taunting. Those boys should be brought to justice for killing beautiful Tatiana. Because of them another tiger is killed. Which brings tigers one step closer to leaving our planet. So I hope they're pretty happy with themselves.Where were the workers? They should be ready at a moments notice for this occasion. They should have been able to grab tranquilizers guns to subdue the taunted tiger. I also blame them for Tatiana's death they should have been their for her. Another comment said "who the heck cares if the tiger was being taunted", I care because if the tiger wasn't being taunted she wouldn't have found the strength to leap out of her area to protect herself. Are most of you people really that stupid? It seems like everyone cares about these boys who KNEW they were doing something wrong and let this whole mess happen to themselves. I will blame these boys because it is their fault.Look at ALL the evidence. People may have hearts but they don't have a brains or common sense. Most people only care about themselves and nobody else. A Tiger can not be replaced as fast as stupid human can. I can not believe some of these comments you've people left behind. It is very sad and troubling that most of you don't understand the significance of a Siberian Tiger. All most of you see are quote "Innocent Boys", seriously open you eyes and look at the bigger picture.I don't think anyone should die or be injured at a Zoo but then again you're at Zoo with wild animals, you're there at your own risk, you're in their house and you don't cross that line. This isn't just about this incident, its about people respecting the animal kingdom in all its glory.Believe me I do have a heart for both people and animals but not when people cause their own problems. These boys are GUILTY!The Zoo is only responsible for Tatiana 's death. Thank you to those who told the truth and care about more then just yourself.
"If those young fellas taunted, threw rocks, or stood high on the rail of the cage, that is no reason to be stalked, mauled, and killed. Those young men were not gang bangers, driving intoxicated, or reaping havoc. On Christmas day, they made a good choice to visit the zoo. Now if that was a WHITE BOY the sensitivity and respect would have been a BIRTH RIGHT!!!!!!
-Antonea Brown " You should be ashamed of yourself. It does matter if you throw things at animals at a Zoo, your breaking the rules AND You are wrong for doing so, there is a reason you don't throw things at animals and those boys sure figured out why.It doesn't matter what color your skin is when you're guilty. When you're wrong you're wrong. Its all in how you're raised. Most decent, well raised kids are taught not to taunt animals .You've been brought up to believe that it's OK to taunt animals and probably other people who aren't your skin tone.Get and education and get over yourself you racist.
i think the only victom of Christmas day is the tiger. the boys clear as day were doing things to the tiger and she as any of us would do defended herself. i say lets put the brothers in a zoo cage and taunt them i am sure at some point thay will lash out. there are no hero's from this just a couple of stupid kids and yes there are other victims besides the tiger all the young people that won't have the chance to see such a wonderful cat. one last set of points. POINT 1 people have eluded to why just these three people think about it. she only did harm to those who she knew were picking on her. she killed the one out side of her cage we might never know if he was her first or not but if she was hungery she would have stopped right there and started to eat him SHE DID NOT. she used her sences to track down the others that she knew was trying to hurt her. she could have gone in ant direction gone after other zoo animals but no she did not. POINT 2 when the police found her ant the brothers reports said she was sitting next to them as if would do if we caught up with someone who we felt was trying to do us harm then reports said she tryed to maul the one again i think this is true but it was never said if that brother was trying to get away from her lets here from the officers that were there to fill in the blanks or is sfpd trying to cover for these punks. i think the tiger was holding these boys for her handlers to show thay were picking on her. one more thing i have not heard a statment where did the report come from of all the cats were out? i think i know. ok now you so called reporters find the answers
I am extremely upset. She shot the tiger. Can you do something better than just shot the tiger. Tiger is a wild animal. Why do they know? Honestly, this case has nothing to do with the siberian tiger. If those boys didn't do anything to the tiger, tiger will not attack them. It's all human's fault.
I was at the zoo a month this incident took place. I saw that beautiful tiger. I am saddened she was killed by the police.
I strongly believe the 3 boys were teasing & taunting the animal. No animal would jump out of his familiar surroundings for no reason unless they have a reason to.
I wouldn't put anything pass those teenagers.
I think it's unfortunate that the parents would capitalize on their son's death for money. I guess now they will be rich & can have a meaningful life.
RN
I'm sorry, but I must say that I am amazed by all of you people that value a tiger, an animal, above human life. It's a picture of our society today. Memorials were left to the tiger, but no memorials to this young man who lost his life. I'm sure you would each be feeling different if it were your loved one who was killed in this tragic way. I don't believe this young man was taunting the tiger, but even if he was, don't you see that from young people on occasion. That's not reason enough to lose your life and in such a vicious way. Each of us has the right to expect that when we visit a zoo, an aquarium, etc., that proper and legal precautions have been taken to ensure our safety. And no amount of money will replace this young man, but certainly the parents have to pursue legal options. This was their child and they can't let his loss be silently forgotten. They owe it to their son. My condolences to the family.
My heart goes out to the family of Carlos. There should have been no way for the tiger to get out of it's enclosure. Someone was cutting corners when they built the enclosure be it the construction company or the zoo. The zoo HAD to know it was not built to specifications. As for the tiger not being tranquilized, it's apparent it was a danger when it attacked it's trainer, I am sorry for it's demise but I personally think it was the right thing to do. It's a wild animal held in captivity, always a good chance it could happen.
Put in servallience cameras so this will not happen again, those poor boys whether they were taunting the tiger or not was not believed when attacked. Imagine what they were going through.
honestly i feel bad for the tiger because it is a wild animal! if you were in the wild and the punks were messing with a tiger what do you honestly think would happen? its not any different because they are in an enclosed space. yes the tiger should not have been able to get out but you would be amazed what animals can do when they are scared or stressed! i feel sorry for carlos' family and as mean as this may sound...karma sucks! ive been to the zoo many times and never felt scared for my safety and i will continue to go to the zoo and take my 4 year old nephew! i think it would be complete crap if they close down the zoo because a few punks thought it would be funny to piss off a tiger!
And i give the zoo officials a pat on the back actually for handling the situation calmly and rationally! If they started to panic, the situation could have turned out much much worse! They did what they could for those PUNKS!
My condolences to the teens boys family. I think alot of people are getting to carried away for the love of animals especially tigers. Tigers are not known as being domestic pets they are known as being wild animals(carnivores!) I want to make something clear we are talking about a human being who was killed by a Carnivore not a simple cute kitty. It doesnt matter if the tiger was taunted or whatever there should've been some type of zoo employees securiting the area for such human behaivor if supposbly the tiger was taunted. I Personally think the police did the right thing in killing this cruecial animal who knows if he might of escape again.if he already had killed somebody i wonder who wouldof been next on his menu. The zoo should be held responsible for this act. They should of provided an adequate barrier between the feeder and the animal.
Wow, I listened to the 911 tapes and the caller appeared to be intoxicated.
I suspect that the animal was harrassed - why laywer up if you were just innocently having fun at the zoo and this Siberian tiger tries to kill you?
IMHO these two "choir boys" were smoking, drinking and bored and they thought it would be fun to torture the cat. Too bad the wrong person was harmed by their actions.
I just had a park ranger tell me that they had to put down a bear outside of SOL because the stupid campers left food in their tent after being warned more than once. No one was harmed but the bear. I'd say that killing the animal was interfering with natural selection process wouldn't you?
WOW! I am so surprised by some of these comments!!! I don't even know what to say!
Bottom line-some people are stupid! I was at the zoo in June and when we got to the Gorilla enclosure there was a big sign asking people to stay behind temporary barricades as they had just introduced a new female and wanted to give them all some space to adapt. My parents and I were the ONLY people to respect this request.Parents and children were in front of the barricades!People cannot be trusted to do the right thing and these things are only addressed when something goes terribly wrong. The zoo needs to people proof the enclosures for the wellbeing of the animals.
